Understanding Merchant Category Codes for your Tangerine Credit Card

Learn how MCCs (Merchant Category Codes) determine how much cash back your purchases earn

MCCs and your Tangerine Credit Card

Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) are four-digit numbers used to classify businesses by the type of goods or services they provide. Each purchase you make is assigned an MCC by the merchant’s payment processor. The MCC identifies which Category your purchase falls into and determines whether it earns 2% or 0.5% cash back, based on your 2% Category choices.

For full details on eligible categories and qualifying purchases, please see the Tangerine Money-Back Rewards Program Terms and Conditions.

Pick your 2% categories

Choose up to three 2% Categories to maximize your unlimited cash back where you spend the most, like groceries or gas. You can change your choices to match your spending every 90 days.

Categories are based on MCCs

Heads-up that we don‘t determine how merchants are categorized. Transactions will earn 2% back when the merchant’s MCC matches up to your selected 2% Categories.

FAQs

Your transaction will only post in one Category, and you’ll only earn 2% back once for the transaction. For example, if you have a fitness transaction that’s recurring, and you’ve chosen both Recurring Bill Payments and Fitness and Sports Clubs as your 2% Categories, you’ll only earn 2% back on that transaction in the Recurring Bill Payments Category.

You can change your Category selections every 90 days. To change Categories or find out when you can make your next change, log in, select your Credit Card Account, and go to ‘Manage Rewards’.

*MCCs are current as of October 28, 2025 and are subject to change by Mastercard.
