How do I open a Tangerine Children's Savings Account?

To open a Children's Savings Account for your child, they must be 11 years old or younger.

The first step to getting a Tangerine Children's Savings Account is to open a Savings Account of your own, if you don’t already have one.

Then, once your own Account is up and running, opening a Tangerine Children's Savings Account is a snap. Just log in and click ‘Open a Savings Account’ on the Overview page. From there, you can select Children’s Savings Account.

You'll need to provide some of your child's personal information, so please remember to have his or her Social Insurance Number and one of the following pieces of ID when enrolling:

  • Canadian Passport
  • Canadian Permanent Resident Card
  • Canadian Secure Certificate of Indian Status
  • Provincial or Territorial Identification Cards
  • Birth Certificate
  • Canadian Citizenship Card or Certificate

A few things to note:

  • Only the parent or legal guardian can open a Children's Savings Account (no aunts, uncles or grandparents) unless you are the legal guardian
  • Only 1 parent can be the joint Account holder with the child
  • Client Cards aren't issued with Children's Savings Accounts
  • Clients can't accept Interac e-Transfers into Children's Savings Account

When the child is approaching the age of 16, we'll reach to let you know it's almost time to convert the Account to a regular Account. Once the child has reached 16 years of age, the Account will automatically be converted to a Tangerine Savings Account in the child's name. Both the parent/guardian and the child will receive an email upon conversion.
