Want to know more about the tap feature of your Tangerine Client Card? Here are the most frequently asked questions.

Where can I pay using the contactless payment feature of my Tangerine Client Card?
Interac® Debit contactless payments are available for transactions of up to $250 at participating merchants across Canada. Just look for the Contactless Symbol™ at checkout. Please note: if your Card was issued before October 22, 2021, your contactless payment limit is set to $100.

Not sure what contactless payment is? Instead of inserting your Card into the terminal and entering your PIN, tap your Client Card (or mobile wallet version of your Card) near the screen of the payment terminal. You should hear a beep to let you know that the payment is being processed and see a confirmation of an approved transaction on the terminal.

Will there be times when I won’t be able to tap and will have to enter my PIN instead?
Most of the time, you’ll be able to tap, and not have to enter your PIN, when paying for purchases within the contactless payment limit. It’s possible that some stores may not be equipped to accept contactless payments or could have set lower limits. In these cases, they may ask you to insert your Card into the chip reader and enter your PIN to pay for your purchases.
Other times when you’ll need to enter your PIN:
• The first time you make a purchase using your Tangerine Client Card.
• Whenever you make a purchase over the contactless payment limit.
• When you’ve reached $500 in cumulative contactless payments within a day (or $200 in cumulative payments for Cards issued before October 22, 2021).
These are safety measures to help ensure you’re the one using your Client Card. When you’ve reached these points, and have completed a transaction by entering your PIN, your Client Card contactless payment limit will reset, so that you can continue to tap to pay for purchases.

Is there a fee for using the tap feature on my Tangerine Client Card?
No. Contactless payments count as regular debit purchases, which are included in the unlimited number of transactions with your Tangerine Chequing Account.

Can I use Interac Debit contactless payments outside Canada?
No, currently Interac Debit contactless payments are only accepted in Canada.

Are contactless payments using my Tangerine Client Card safe?
Your Client Card comes with several precautions to help protect you from fraud and limit potential risks:
• Contactless payments are limited to a maximum purchase amount
• Contactless payments have set cumulative spend limits. When you reach this limit within a day, you’ll be prompted to insert your Card into the chip reader and enter your PIN to complete the transaction. This is a safety measure to help ensure you’re the one using your Client Card.
• Purchases made using your Client Card, including contactless payments, have Interac and Visa Debit Zero Liability protection. So, you don’t have to worry about paying for unauthorized purchases (in most cases). More information is available at
