Visa Debit FAQ

Visa Debit FAQ Page

Want to know all there is about Tangerine's Visa* Debit? Here are the most frequently asked questions.

  1. Does Tangerine offer Visa Debit?
Yes, Visa* Debit is here! As of Fall 2020, all new Chequing Clients will receive a Client Card with Visa Debit.

If you're already a Chequing Client and have requested a Client Card upgrade to a new one with Visa Debit, you can expect your Card in the coming weeks. If you haven’t upgraded your Client Card yet, requesting an upgrade is easy. Just log in if you aren't already logged in, and go to your Chequing Account. Then follow the instructions from there.

  2. I don’t have a Tangerine Chequing Account. What do I need to do to get Visa* Debit?
A Client Card with Visa Debit comes with the Tangerine Chequing Account. Once you've opened a Chequing Account, it takes about 2 weeks for your Client Card to arrive in the mail.

  3. I saw something about getting upgraded to a new Client Card – what’s different about the new Card?
Your new Client Card will work just like your current one, but with the addition of Visa Debit. Visa Debit will give you the ability to safely pay directly from your Tangerine Chequing Account when you shop online, in-app, and around the world at millions of merchants in over 200 countries.

  4. Is Visa Debit a credit card?
No, Visa Debit isn’t a credit card. Paying with your Client Card with Visa Debit means you’re paying using money directly from your Tangerine Chequing Account.

  5. Are there any fees associated with Visa Debit?
With the introduction of Visa* Debit and the ability to shop internationally, a Foreign Currency Conversion Fee for transactions in foreign currency will apply.  There will still be no fees for daily transactions like debit purchases, bill payments, and Interac e‑Transfer® transactions. A copy of our Fee Schedule can be found here.

  6. Can the joint Account holder have a different Card colour than the primary cardholder?
Absolutely, yes. Each Account holder has the option to choose their Card colour.

  7. What’s the exchange rate used when using Visa Debit for international purchases?
The exchange rates for Visa* Debit are set by the Visa network and determined on the date of your purchase. In addition, transactions in a foreign currency are subject to Tangerine's Foreign Currency Conversion Fee. Learn more about our fees here.

  8. How do I use my Client Card to pay for gas by Visa Debit at the pump in the US?
Gas stations and some other US merchants may ask for you to enter your ZIP code. If you're prompted to enter a Zip Code, enter the three numerical digits of your Postal Code with "00" at the end. So "M1M 2M3" would be "12300".

  9. I have a Tangerine Chequing Account. When I receive my upgraded Client Card with Visa* Debit, will I have to change my pre-authorized payment information?
You shouldn’t have to change your pre-authorized payment information when you upgrade your Client Card. Pre-authorized payments use your Account information (like your Account Number and Transit Code) to process the transaction. These don’t change when you upgrade your Client Card. Upgrading your Card also won’t impact any bill payments that you’ve set up online from your Chequing Account.

Just a heads up that once you have your new Client Card with Visa* Debit, if you need a Card replacement after that, you may have to update your Client Card information (Card Number, expiry) with merchants.
