November 5 marks one of the biggest days in ING DIRECT’s 16-year history, and a very exciting one! It is especially humbling to me personally to see the evolution of our business. I was the eighth employee when we first opened our doors in 1997. And before I became CEO, I was fortunate to work in many different roles. A lot has changed since then.
For those of you who remember, ING DIRECT started as a telephone bank offering only savings accounts and it’s remarkable to think of how far we’ve come in such a short time.
Our mission has always been simple. We wanted to challenge the status quo and show Canadians there was a better way to save in this country. We created a bank that would help you save and we take great pride in helping Canadians get more from their hard-earned money. And we know that all of our success is due to your commitment to us, as well as our team of almost 1,000 employees.
The acquisition by Scotiabank in November of 2012 means we are no longer owned by ING Groep and that we have to change our name. But I want to be clear, what we are sharing with you today, is a new name and a new logo. That’s it.
Nothing has changed about our core values and what we stand for. We’re keeping everything you love about ING DIRECT. Great interest rates. No fees, and award-winning customer service. There will be no changes to client numbers, pin numbers or passwords. In the coming years, we will be adding new products and services that you have been asking for a long time.
Our new name articulates everything ING DIRECT has stood for from day one. We believe – as you have told us – that everyday banking should be simple, flexible and accessible. It should be easy! So we knew that the uniqueness of a name, particularly in the financial services industry, would be very important to us. It’s no small change. It’s a huge milestone in the story we’ll continue to tell about ING DIRECT.
So, today, I am thrilled to announce that our new name is…Tangerine!
Tangerine honours everything we’ve built together. And more importantly it reflects our motivation to keep improving the everyday banking experience and to continue fighting for what’s right for Canadians.
ING DIRECT has been a pioneer since 1997. And Tangerine, with its new logo, clearly articulates our DNA as we move forward. It is bold, because we are exactly that. It is energetic, strong, and modern. And it represents our evolution from a telephone bank with only a savings account to an everyday bank complete with mutual funds, mortgages, and a no-fee chequing account. Tangerine is what we believe forward banking is all about…
In our 16-year history, we formed a unique connection with you, our clients. And I feel it in the many interactions we have whether by phone, email, at Cafés, Facebook or on Twitter. You have shaped our past, present and future. And I look forward to preserving our promise, to operate with transparency and honesty and to advocate for you. It is quite simply who we are. And even though our name has changed, and we might look a little different, our mission remains 100 percent unchanged.
We will continue to operate as ING DIRECT until the spring of 2014, but we felt strongly, that in the spirit of transparency, we reveal our new name in advance.
I am so thrilled to have been able to share this announcement with you. I feel inspired, energized and ready to continue challenging, innovating and driving solutions that help you live better lives. You have my personal commitment that we’ll continue to do so. Thank you for supporting us for the last 16 years, and for the many years to come!
